Candle Care

How to Care for Your Dacota Éclat Candles

Proper candle care helps your candle burn more evenly, maintain a beautiful flame and give you the best possible experience from the first light to the final burn. Follow these simple candle care tips to help protect your candle, your home and the quality of every burn.

Trim the Wick

Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm). Keeping the wick properly trimmed helps maintain a steady flame and can reduce excessive flickering, smoking and soot.

If the flame becomes unusually large or begins to smoke, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely and trim the wick before lighting it again.

The First Burn

The first candle burn is especially important. Allow the wax to melt evenly across most or all of the surface, when possible, before extinguishing the candle.

Creating an even melt pool during the first burn helps encourage consistent burning and can reduce tunneling, where wax remains around the sides while the candle burns down through the center.

How Long to Burn Your Candle

For most container candles, we recommend burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time unless the individual candle instructions state otherwise.

After each use, allow the wax to cool and solidify completely before trimming the wick or lighting the candle again.

Choose the Right Place

Always place your candle on a stable, flat and heat-resistant surface. Keep burning candles away from open windows, fans, air-conditioning vents and other drafts that may disturb the flame.

Keep candles away from children, pets and anything that could catch fire. Before lighting, make sure the wax surface is free from wick trimmings, matches and other debris.

Extinguishing Your Candle

Use a candle snuffer when available or gently blow out the flame. Never use water to extinguish a candle.

After extinguishing the flame, make sure the wick remains centered and upright. Allow the candle, container and melted wax to cool completely before touching or moving them.

When to Stop Burning Your Candle

Do not burn your candle all the way to the bottom of the container. Stop using the candle when approximately 1/2 inch (12 mm) of wax remains at the bottom, or earlier if indicated on the candle's safety label.

This helps prevent the base of the container from becoming excessively hot as the flame approaches the bottom.

How to Store Your Candles

Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or high temperatures may affect the appearance, color, fragrance or texture of the wax.

When possible, keep your candle covered or protected from dust between uses to help preserve its appearance and fragrance.

Natural Wax Characteristics

Our candles are handcrafted in small batches, and subtle variations in the wax may naturally occur. Depending on the wax blend, temperature and environment, you may notice slight changes in texture, color or surface appearance.

These small variations are a natural part of handcrafted candle making and do not necessarily affect the way your candle performs.

Candle Safety

Always follow the safety instructions provided with your individual candle. Never leave a burning candle unattended and never burn a candle near anything that could catch fire.

Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets. Never move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid, and do not continue using a candle if its container becomes cracked, chipped or damaged.

Enjoy Every Burn

A few simple candle care habits can make a meaningful difference. Trim the wick before each use, give your candle an even first burn, keep it away from drafts and always follow proper candle safety practices.

Each Dacota Éclat candle is thoughtfully created to bring fragrance, warmth and atmosphere into your home. With proper care, you can enjoy a beautiful candle experience from the first light to the final glow.

Warm wishes,
